Just what is “Spiritual Formation” anyway?
In one way, this is the title of a division of programming in our church which assumes responsibility for classic church tasks centered on discipleship of the believer. Yet in another way it’s something much larger and more personal. One definition says that Spiritual Formation is “hearts engaged in the journey of a life transformed by Jesus—to resist conformity with the world and to be formed in His image.” Let’s consider the parts of this definition.
Hearts engaged: Give yourself a “heart check” right now. As a Christian, are you still in touch with your love and devotion to Christ? Do you remember when you were a new believer and how that impacted your life? Maybe you’ve never made a personal commitment to Christ.
Consider the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ: People chose their own way rather than God’s way (sin). Our Heavenly Creator couldn’t bear the thought of being separated from us for eternity, so God made a way to redeem us through the sacrificial death and glorious resurrection of His Son, Jesus. Engaging your heart with that fact is transformational.
If you’ve lost your passion or want to know more about what it means to be a follower of Christ please contact a staff member, group leader or trusted Christian friend today!
In the journey: A journey is active and moving. It implies traveling to a destination. Is that true of your spiritual life? Are you actively pursuing options to strengthen your understanding of Jesus? Many study opportunities are available to adults, students, children and families in all stages of life on any schedule imaginable. The best source of information on these programs or events is the Weekly Walk booklet. Contact our Spiritual Formation Ministers to find a place to begin or continue your personal journey.
Of a life transformed by Jesus: Spiritual transformation is a continual process that may find its root in our spirits but shows its fruit outwardly. How are you becoming more like Christ? Are you being changed in ways that people will recognize Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of your life? Maybe it’s a less obvious transformation, such as one involving your finances or how you treat members of your household.
To resist conformity with the world and to be formed in His image: Accountability and connectedness can help your faith journey continue to evolve. More important, though, is how it can help you avoid the trappings that so easily entice us to conform to the world rather than to Jesus Christ.
Another key is consistency. It’s easier to learn a new language when you immerse yourself into a culture and language in every aspect of daily living. Similarly we can best know the image of Christ and how we are to be like Him when we regularly immerse ourselves in the study of His Word. Spiritual fitness involves a commitment to consistent study, worship and service.
With the power of God in us through the Holy Spirit, spiritual formation is a journey of great joy and perfect satisfaction as we seek to become like Christ.
